Thoughts for Thursday :: Beautycounter Products and Why I Keep Ordering

I've mentioned Beautycounter products before, but haven't done a big review since using them for a few months now.  I was introduced to the products by a friend from church, but didn't give it much thought until my mom attended a party for it and learned more about the kids product line "Kids Counter".

Jack has had skin issues since he was a baby.  We've visited with a dermatologist, switched him to prescription lotions and creams and upgraded his body wash and shampoo to extra-sensitive, more high end brands.  The best one we found for him was the California Baby Eczema Shampoo and Body Wash.  It wasn't perfect (and very expensive) but it worked the best.

...until I tried the Beautycounter Kids line and fell in love!  My top five reasons for using it:

1.  No more skin issues for Jack
2.  Smells great
3.  A little goes a long way
4.  Easy ordering and fast shipping
5.  No harmful chemicals.  It even rated good on the "Think Dirty" app that rates products in terms of their ingredients.

I've tried and loved five products now from Beautycounter and will continue to use and order.

1.  Kids Counter Squeaky Clean Bodywash
2.  Kids Counter Nice Do Shampoo
3.  Protect All Over Sunscreen, SPF 30 :: awesome citrus smell and non-greasy
4.  Rosewater Uplifting Spray :: I use this daily and is so refreshing in the Houston heat
5.  Lip Sheer in Coral :: perfect mix of moisture and color.  Love that it's light for summer!

I don't personally sell these products, but I am hosting a "Facebook Social" to learn more about the products and win giveaway items.  The social is online now through Sunday.  If you are interested in learning more...no pressure to buy I promise...leave a comment and I can add you to the Facebook Group.

You can also use this link to browse the products

Thoughts for Thursday :: Loving Lately

Happy Thursday!  I just wanted to share a few products with you that I've been loving lately.  As you will see below, I get most of my recommendations from fellow bloggers, so I wanted to pass along what I've tried and love!

Milani Baked Blush :: I've been using my Milani blush nonstop these days in the color Berry Amore.  To me it's a dupe for Mac's Stereo Rose baked blush. These are a fraction of the cost of Mac's blush, but very similar.  I find them at my local CVS.  The color payoff is awesome and stays on all day.  The packaging is great too with a mirror included at the bottom of the compact. These were recommended to me by Meg of Meg O. on the Go!  She has the best drug store dupes on her blog and YouTube Channel!

Honest Organic Body Oil and Moroccanoil Dry Body Oil :: I've been loving body oils lately for my growing belly.  I picked up the Honest Co. oil at my local Target.  I love it because it not only feels great, but does not have a strong scent.  Cocoa body oils have been way too strong for me lately.  I also love the Moroccanoil body oil when I want more of a scent for the day.  This smells great and as recommended by Kristina of Pretty, Shiny, Sparkly pairs great with the Nest fragrance White Sandalwood.

The Baby Chick Maternity Tees :: Local baby guru and friend Nina Bassett just launched a new site for moms called The Baby Chick.   She also owns Bassett Baby Planning in Houston for you local mommas.  Be sure to follow the awesome blog, but I've really been loving this "Shopping for Two" maternity shirt.  It's so soft and comfy that I've not only been wearing it around the house and running errands, but grabbed for it at our recent Houston Moms Blog event paired with skinny jeans and black wedges.  I've worn it so much that I think it's time for me to get another one - maybe the It's a Boy tee!

Getting Beach Bag ready :: {Bag by Sarahjanes Oilcloth, Inspiration by Shay of Mix & Match Family}
After reading Shay's post about her pool bag essentials I wanted to get mine ready too with updated sunscreen (all of mine was so old and way past expiration) and other essentials.  I'm all set and just ready for the weather to cooperate this weekend for Memorial Day - it's not looking hopeful :(

Peonies :: It's that {short} time of year again when peonies are in season and Instagram is taken over by images of these gorgeous flowers in everyone's homes.  Guilty as charged.  I wasn't thrilled with the dark purple color that was the only color I could find, however they ended up looking perfect in my house!  Trader Joe's for the win!

What are some things that you are loving lately?

Five on Friday :: Things I'm Loving & A Few Busts

Happy Friday!  Jason and I are super excited today because we just learned Coffee Bean's gender!  I plan to announce it next week...I know that's just mean of me!  We still need time to tell the rest of our family and let it sink in.  Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

I wanted to share a few things that I've been just loving lately.

ONE:  Beauty

Rose Salve Lip Balm
This stuff was raved by Shay of Mix and Match Mamahttp://www.shullfamily.blogspot.com/ so I added it to my shopping cart last time I placed a Nordstrom order and now I love it!  I primarily use it on my lips but you can use for cuticles or any dry spots on your body!  Don't worry mom...you may find this in your Mother's Day gift (she is obsessed with anything rose and I know would order it if I didn't tell her that)!

Clinique "Pop Lip" Color & Primer
I'm loving these new lipsticks by Clinique because they are moisturizing and have great color pay-off.  They are not long-lasting, but do their job and stay on long enough.  I have Love Pop and Cherry Pop.  My next buy will be Bare Pop!

TWO:  Tech

iPhone 6 Plus &
iPhone 6 Plus Case by Rifle Paper Co. {Transparent Clear Rosa}
Jason bought me a new iPhone last week.  I totally didn't need one, but he negotiated some sort of deal when he was getting himself a new phone so why not!  I opted for the larger iPhone 6 Plus thinking I would enjoy the larger screen for images, Instagram, YouTube and Facebook...all the essentials for a blogger.  It honestly took some getting used to, but now I LOVE it.  If you don't have a tablet that you use often this is a great compromise.

And on top of loving my beautiful gold phone, I'm loving this case by Rifle Paper Co. recommended by Kristina of Pretty Shiny Sparkly.  I love that you can still see the beautiful phone with a little extra pop, just perfect for spring.

THREE:  Baby

Honest Bowtie Diaper Print
I mean, how can you not love this adorable print on a chubby toddler bum!  I bought mine at Target.

FOUR:  Clothing

Denim Jacket
My denim jacket is a few years old from Old Navy (regular sizing), but now that I'm pregnant have been putting it in heavy rotation lately with maternity tops and dresses.  It's perfect to pair with spring tops when you are in a chilly store or office.  Mine is a super dark denim so it looks great with black pants, dresses, or even lighter denim on the bottom.  Would also look amazing paired with white pants.

FIVE:  Office

Day Designer
My Day Designer has not left my side since I started using is on January 1.  I actually left it at home a few days ago and felt lost the entire day without it.  Couldn't love it more and highly recommend!

And what's a favorites list without a few busts ::

Clinique All About Eyes Serum De-Puffing Eye - this product was raved about from Kate of The Small Things Blog.  As a toddler mom and now expecting, I'm always tired so the thought of a cooling eye pen seemed perfect!  Although, the roller ball does feel good when applying, it doesn't do a thing for de-puffing in my opinion.  Jason even tried this one a few times when he had some eye bags and thought the same thing.  Seems like a waste of money!

The Dry Bar "Morning After" Shower Cap - I purchased this shower cap on a whim without reading the reviews on sephora.com.  After using this for a few weeks, I can confirm that the negative reviews were 100% accurate.  This shower cap is great for totally covering your hair, but poorly designed.  The lining on the inside does not dry completely (I tried everything except drying it in my dryer after each use because that seems excessive).  After just a few uses, it started to smell like mold and went in the trash! Waste of money.

Lilly Pulitzer for Target Cover-Ups - I was able to snag a few Lilly Pulitzer for Target cover-ups that I was coveting through a LFT Facebook page, however once I had them in hand they weren't that great.  The print, colors and material were all great.  The fit was HUGE on the kaftan and looked like I was wearing an old lady nightgown.  I'm sure all of the other Lilly for Target stuff is great, but if you are frustrated that you haven't scored a coverup yet, don't waste your time.  Luckily I was able to sell mine!

Beauty Product Hauls: Hits, Misses and Old Faithfuls

Over the last few months I've purchased a handful of items at Ulta, Sephora and the drugstore.  I also got motivated and cleaned out my makeup and beauty products drawers so I could re-discover all of the good stuff I already had!  I've stumbled upon lots of hits and just a few misses.

I also included my old faithful products that I use everyday no matter what look I'm going for.  I have fun playing with my eyes or {usually} lips keeping everything else the same day-to-day.

Hits

Too Faced Natural Eye Neutral Eye Shadow Collection -If you like neutral shades, this is a must-have.  Great mix of matte and shimmer in a compact tin case.  Too Faced shadow stays on all day and goes on easy, blending well.  I prefer this shadow over my Naked Palettes (gasp)!

Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Double Ended Eye Pencil - goes on easy, stays on all day even in the Houston heat and I love that there are 2 colors in one pencil! Great for travel.

Urban DecayAll Nighter Long Lasting-Makeup Setting Spray - I thought this was sort of gimicky and an unnecessary step in my makeup application, however I really think it works.  For the past 2 weeks, I've used this product off and on to see if it's really making a difference and it is.  Perfect for the Houston heat when normally your makeup sweats off your face in a hour!

NYX Cream Blush - I love this long-lasting cream blush on days that I'm not doing a full face of makeup, but don't want to scare small children.  There are a ton of colors to choose from, but I went with a brighter shade (Glow) to give me a flushed look.  If I'm running errands on the weekend I might just do this, concealer and mascara.

Revlon Colorstay Moisure Stain (Barcelona Nights, Shanghai Sizzle, Cannes Crush) - LOVE this line.  I want every single color.  The three colors are have are bright and vibrant, stay on longer than most lip products and feels light.  It has a great, glossy look without the stickiness.

Also loving the NYX Butter Gloss and Maybelline Color Elixir.  Both are very similar to Revlon Moisture Stain - all around the same price point, great color pay off and glossy look.  Moisture Stain does last longer and is my favorite.

Misses

Urban Decay Pulp Fiction Eye Palette {not pictured} - I ordered this eye shadow palette online not out of my love of the movie (I've never seen it), but out of my love for a neutral, matte palette.  This was a miss for me not for the actual makeup, but the packaging.  It is HUGE, but with very little actual makeup.  It was too large for my makeup bag so back it went.  Instead try: Urban Decay Naked Basics Palette  If you want something similar, but less compact, .  And it's cheaper!

Maybelline Eye Studio Tattoo Eyeshadow - This shadow is very similar to Mac's Paint Pots for a fraction of the price.  It's actually not a bad product, but I've been spoiled by Mac and prefer their version.  The color I tried - Bronze to the Bone - didn't have the color payoff I was looking for and did not last all day.  It also melted into my crease as the day went on.

Maybelline Pumped Up Colossal Mascara - This was just okay.  Nothing special.  Seemed to lengthen a little, but did not add any fullness.  Instead try: L'Oreal Voluminous Miss Manga.

Too Faced Melted Liquified Long Wear Lipstick in Melted Coral.  I've heard great reviews by beauty bloggers on this product so I decided to try it despite the $21 price tag.   This is typically more than I will spend on a lip product.  I was not impressed.  It was very dry and smeared easily.  Instead try Revlon Moisture Stain (see above) in Cannes Crush.

Kid Tested, Mom Approved Link-Up {Tried & True Toys}

I'm linking up today with Julie of The Girl in the Red Shoes for another Kid Tested, Mom Approved Link-Up Party.  Today's post is all about tried and true toys.

Let's face it, kids love toys...and so do moms! We all have a ton of them, but what toys are your kid's favorites?

It's hard to say what toys a 4 month old really loves at this point, but there are a few items that have him excited these days:

Angel Dear Blankie - Jack has a million "lovies" but never really acted like they were a big deal to him until the Angel Dear one was introduced.  I bought him one after reading from other bloggers that there was something about Angel Dear that their kiddos just loved.  They were all right!  Tip: buy the three pack {a pair and a spare} so you can always have a clean backup on hand and one in your diaper bag.

Nursery Farm Hug & Hide Owl - Jack also has a million stroller toys (spoiled), but this one is his fave and keeps his attention longer than any others.  It's entertaining, but also cuddly for those naps.

Football Oball - He has several different Oball products including the rattle, but the football is by far his favorite.  I think because he likes to stick the ends of the football in his mouth.  This is a great first toy since they are so lightweight and easy to grasp.

Jellycat Friends - Cutest stuffed animals ever that are so soft and cuddly.  Jack loves to snuggle these guys...plus they are cute in his room for a happy mama!

Erin Condren Life Planner Reveal Vlog 2013

I just love my new Erin Condren Life Planner for 2013-14. I'm very happy that I purchased the special Gold Edition and love all of the upgrades that I ordered. The markers are MUCH better than the pens from 2012, however I still prefer the Paper Mate Flair pens.  Ready to purchase your own Life Planner?

Let me know if you have any questions.  Read about last year's planners: 2012 and 2011

I'm beyond excited that Erin Condren is one of the sponsors at the Blog Elevated conference I'm attending later this week in Houston!!!  I'm not sure what capacity they will be participating, but hopefully I will get to chat up some of their peeps!

I have not been compensated in any way for this review.

Hair Product Review: BaByliss Nano Titanium Portofino Dryer

{Cue Angels singing from Heaven}

My hairdryer (Hot Tools) bit the dust a few weeks ago so I took a leap of faith and purchased the BaByliss Nano Titanium Portofino Dryer hoping it would solve all of my life's problems.  Maybe it didn't solve every problem, but it certainly has worked wonders on my hair.  I'm a true BaByliss convert.  Yes, it is expensive, but for someone who blow dries their hair almost every day it's worth it.

There are other BaBylis models out there...some more $ and some less $.  This seemed to be the perfect choice for me.  I even sought advice from a hairstylist who thought the Portofino is the best model available for non-professional use.  I was also very happy that this particular model comes with four detachable parts: 3 different sized concentrators and 1 diffuser.

My hair is naturally very wavy and very thick.  I like to wear my hair smooth and straight.  To achieve this look in the past, I've had to blow dry it straight using my dryer and a round brush.  Then follow that with a hair straightener (especially for muggy Houston days).  The entire routine took me between 30-45 minutes depending on my hair length and how long I let it air dry.

I've also tried every dryer and hair product under the moon: Chi, Hot Tools, serums, oils, etc.

I've used my new dryer for 2 weeks now and I'm in love.  It has cut down on the dry time and has completely eliminated my need for a straightener.  I'm able to achieve perfectly straight and smooth hair that stays that way all day with just the dryer and large round brush!  Even on days when I'm running late and just have a few minutes to blow dry, my hair looks good.

Before

After

I purchased my dryer at my local Ulta store, but you can also order online with free shipping on all orders over $25!

I was not compensated in any way for this post by BaByliss or Ulta (I wish).

Five Things That Surprised Me Most About Parenthood + Giveaway!

We are just about to celebrate Jack's 3 Month Birthday so I think this is a great time to reflect upon what parenthood has been like thus far.  Jason asked me the other night if being a mom is what I thought it would be.  For the most part, yes.  It is amazing and wonderful just like I thought.  There are aspects that are easier than I thought -- like balancing work and baby time -- and there are aspects that are harder than I thought -- like breastfeeding.

Here are five things that surprised me most about parenthood:

1.  The emotional roller coaster the first few weeks
I was a total basket case the first two weeks of Jack's life.  I cried at the drop of a hat.  Not out of sadness, but out of overwhelming love, stress, fear, worry, and happiness.  I loved this little baby so much that I couldn't stand it.  Everything just pulled at my heartstrings and made me cry.  I remember that I could not watch the news those first few weeks because it would make me too emotional.  I even broke out into tears when my mom surprised me with a cake from my favorite bakery for my 30th birthday (10 days postpartum)!

My baby boy and I on my 30th birthday.  He was the best present ever!

2.   Breastfeeding is hard work and will take up most of your time at first
I wrote about this topic here, but in summary I was just ignorant about the amount of work and dedication it takes to breastfeed.  It's 100% worth it in the end (and I actually LOVE it now), but I really thought something was wrong with me in the beginning because it wasn't easy.

3.  Staring at your baby is the most fun thing to do
What do Jason and I find ourselves doing for fun these days?  Staring at Jack.  We can watch him for hours on end...smiling, sleeping, playing, even fussing.  Forget Netflix.   Our baby boy is all the entertainment we need these days!

4.  There is no standard answer to your baby problems
Being a first time mom, I asked a lot of questions at the hospital when Jack was born.  I was so surprised at how many different answers I was given to the same question from the hospital staff.  One nurse would say to feed our baby anytime he cried and for as long as he would eat.  The next nurse advised us to watch the clock and stop his feedings after a certain amount of time.  I got so frustrated, but quickly learned to listen to all the advice I was given, but then rely on my instincts and trust that I knew what was best for my baby.

5.  How sensitive baby's skin is
The first few days of Jack's life we used the hospital provided wipes during diaper changes (the kind you wet with water first).  No problems.  When we went home we started using the traditional wet wipes and Jack immediately developed the worst diaper rash.  It looked horrible and I felt like a terrible mom!  I tried several different brands of wipes, but nothing seemed to make it better.  At Jack's 2 week check-up we showed the pediatrician who told us to stop using wipes altogether and start using water and washcloths to wipe him at every diaper change.  She said lots of newborn's skin is too sensitive for wipes.  No one tells you these things!

So we basically moved all of the cute changing table items into the bathroom, nixed the wipes and wipe warmers (what a waste) and bought a ton of cheap wash cloths for each diaper change.  We are still doing all diaper changes in the bathroom to be next to the sink and he does well.  We also religiously use Dr. Smith's Diaper Rash Ointment now at every diaper change to keep the red away.  I picked it up after reading other bloggers rave about it.  This is the only creme that has worked for us (even compared to a prescription creme we tried).

Dr. Smith's is now available nationwide at Walgreen's as of last week! You can find your closest retailer by visiting doctorsmiths.com.

To celebrate their nationwide launch, Dr. Smith's is doing a giveaway for the readers of The Perfect Catch!  They are generously giving away one $50 Walgreens gift card and a supply of diaper rash ointment to one lucky reader.  Enter below, good luck and now tell me...

Maternity Lifesaver

Reversible Seamless Tank by Eloise, $24.00

I have worn these tanks from Anthropologie for years and they are not maternity tanks, however they have been maternity lifesavers for me!  I wear them almost everyday as a layering tank underneath regular tops, maternity tops, dresses, etc.  They provide a nice smoothness, even thin t-shirts, long length at the bottom so I'm not self conscious, and good coverage in the cleavage area!  I did this before I was pregnant, but with a growing belly, they have been lifesavers to give my bump a little more coverage and smoothness.

I love them for the stretch, they stay in place and are reversible!  One side is a vneck while the other is a scoopneck!

Since I wear them almost everyday now, I have two in the basic colors: black, cream, and white.  They almost never go on sale and are a little pricey for a tank, but they last forever (if you wash them on delicate cycle and hang dry).  I definitely get my money's worth on these!

Get the basic colors here for regular price of $24.00 OR hurry and snag some bright colors for $9.95 on sale here

If you are unsure about sizing, size up.  Also, I've found the heathered colors don't fit the same and are not my favorite...they seem smaller and shorter.

You don't have to wait until Easter to get a Cadbury Cream Egg!  This year, you can buy a Cadbury Screme Egg.  Love these so much...they even have a little Halloween twist in the middle with green gooey goodness!  Thanks Ashley for telling me about them...you were right, CVS has them!

Deoderant Removing Sponge

Ladies, who else has the problem of getting deodorant marks on your dark clothing?  I do, no matter what type of deodorant I use or how I get dressed.  I feel like this happens to me often since I wear a lot of black, especially in the fall and winter on all my sweaters.

This product by Hollywood Fashion is a must!  I have used it for a year and it really and truly works great.  Since it's a small and light sponge I just keep it in my purse for whenever I need it...or for a friend in need!

Get it here on Amazon for only $5.62!  FYI, this is the same company who makes the Fashion Tape that I swear by and use for everything from quick pant hems to low cut tops that you want to stick to you.

September Birchbox Vlog

This was not my favorite Birchbox, but I didn't hate it enough to cancel my subscription.  Overall, I continue to feel that for $10/month I am getting my money's worth and discovering some amazing products that I now use everyday...this just wasn't that month.  But I did get 100 extra Birchbox points for receiving a duplicate item.  Thanks Birchbox!

Have a great Monday!

April Birchbox Review

Yes, this is a month-late, but nevertheless, I wanted to review April's Birchbox.  The theme in April was Natural Wonders so the products were related to skin care and natural beauty.  All in the all, I would say this was my least favorite box yet.  I did not order any of the products after trying.

1.  Wonderstruck by Taylor Swift
My review:  smells good, but I prefer the Juicy Couture perfume sample over this one.  Great for travel though.  Not good enough to buy full-size.

2.  Pur Minerals 4-in-1 Mineral Tinted Moisturizer
This is the one product I have yet to try.  Will update you when I do.  Was given the medium tone which is perfect for me.

3.  Kahina Giving Beauty Argan Oil
Tried on my face and did not like it, however, I'm reading now that it can be used to rehydrate hair.  May like it for this purpose.

4.  Kahina Giving Beauty Facial Lotion
Did not like the smell or feel of this facial lotion.  I prefer my go-to Neutrogena Sensitive Skin Moisurizer that I've been using for years.  I always go back to this!

5.  Yes To: Blueberries Brightening Facial Towelettes
I was most excited for this product because it was such a generous sample (20 towelettes).  They smell amazing, blueberry and lemon scented.  I used these a few times, however, started breaking out a few days later so I have since stopped.  Who knows if my breakout was caused by the wipes, but since my skin is thankfully back to normal, I don't want to risk it and try again.

6.  Benta Berry G-1 Exfoliating Facial Cleanser
This product was okay.  Smells good and cleansed okay.  I don't think it was "scrubby" enough and prefer my St. Ives Apricot Scrub that can be purchased at the drug store.

I'm still a major fan of Birchbox and can't wait to receive my May Box, rumored to be the "Gossip Girl" themed box!  Click here to join Birchbox

Did you know they now offer a Men's Birchbox.  I would totally sign Jason up for this, however it is $20/month rather than the $10/month for the girl's box.  Is it me or does $20/month seem steep for a subscription service of samples.  Ten is my threshold.   Sorry Jason.

Almond Joy Obsession

I love Almond Joy candy bars and lately they have been everywhere!  In my office, in my house (Jason's obsessed too) and everywhere in between.

We just got back from Vegas (numerous trip posts coming soon) where I devoured enjoyed an Almond Joy Martini at Sugar Factory and this morning I tried the new Almond Joy coffee creamer by International Delight, which I highly recommend!

In Love with Lulu

I made the mistake of checking out my local Lululemon store last week.  Big mistake.  Big, big mistake because I fell in love with everything!  I knew it must be fabulous since it's all anyone wears at my gym despite the crazy price tag for workout clothes.

I always thought my Target workout clothes were wonderful.  No.  Here are a few of my favorites:
Turbo Tank, $52.00

Spin Me Tank, $52.00
Spin Me Tank

Define Jacket, $99.00
(The salesperson told me this was one of the "must-haves" and most popular Lululemon items)

Wunder Under Crop, $68.00

Acro Crop, $86.00
Peacock feather (love) design actually adds a sticky grip useful for certain Yoga poses
At least now I know what to ask for at Christmas.  Lululemon Gift Cards please!

Falsies Mascara

This is my new mascara love: Falsies Volume Express by Maybelline.  The slightly curved brush makes my lashes really long, thick and fanned out.  I've learned not to use too much (just few strokes) or it will clump a bit.  I'm usually not very loyal to my mascara.  I will try the latest on the market, any brand, each time a tube runs out and this one is hands down my favorite!  Hope you like.  Any other great mascaras out there that I should try?

Favorite Things

Meet my favorite pair of shoes, Peggyfo, by Nine West.  I first found them in nude at DSW, fell in love and ordered them online in black.  They are so comfortable, go with everything and are nice enough for the office. Plus the peep toe makes them cooler than regular pumps.

They are $79.00 online at Nine West in a few colors (the "Gray Reptile" is on sale right now for $47.40), but the awesome nude color I have isn't listed.  Try DSW.
