Maternity Leave in America

This article is a must read for every American, especially women.  Very interesting and hitting super close to home right now.

  1. There definitely has to be the option of a longer maternity leave should a woman request or desire it. I'm just concerned about who would pay for the maternity leave. I teach and it is obviously a woman-dominant field - districts are cash strapped right now as it is and that would be a whole lot of money being paid out to the employee and the substitute covering the maternity leave. I'm not saying it shouldn't happen, but I understand financially how it could be a burden to the district. Personally for me, 12 weeks was MORE than enough time off from work. I was desperate to get back in the classroom and out of the house. But I would venture to guess that my postpartum experience was a little different than many other women. I think the bottom line is that the option for longer WITH the promise of a job to return to should be available to all women.
