My Love/Hate Relationship with Blogland

I've been blogging for over 6 years - clearly I love it!  I love the friends I've made, the memories that are captured and the supportive community that come along with the blogosphere.

But with any good thing there are always drawbacks.

Today I'm feeling those.

Maybe it's just the time of year - I always get tense and stressed and honestly, it's just not the hap-happiest season of all to me.  Don't get me wrong, I love that it is a time to reflect on the year and celebrate the birth of Jesus, but the pressure for the decorations, gift-giving, picture taking, card-exchanging and thousands of other {silly} obligations get to me.

I had a rough day today {hello double-ear infection on my already broken-legged boy and a car that decided to die this morning when we needed to get to doc}.  I thought scrolling through my blogroll would be a nice way to unwind this evening.

I just read {what felt like} a million posts reporting that...

...Christmas decorations are up and perfect
...100% of their gifts are purchased
...100% of their gifts are purchased, wrapped and under the {freaking} tree
...Not only is the perfect tree up, but we put up five!!!
...Christmas cards are ordered, addressed and ready for the mail

And I'm officially hyperventilating!!!

I'm honestly happy for all of you go-getters out there.  I promise I'm not being jealous or bitter.

I'm just reporting that sometimes our little blogland makes me feel like crap about myself, but I guess that is social media in general.  Why am I comparing my whole life to someone else's highlight reel?

I guess I just didn't get the memo that fall decor pre-Thanksgiving is so OUT this year.  Being ready for Christmas Day on November 17 is the new black.

  1. Oh girl! I feel you!! Sometimes social media leaves me feeling... empty. I hope Jack gets healthy asap and that you and Jason catch a much-needed break! You are a wonderful wife, mother, and friend! Thinking about you. :-)

  2. Not in this house! You have time! Deep breaths. We travel for a big chunk of thanksgiving week so I do try to get a few things done per departure just so I don't return and freak. Hope little man is on the mend.

  3. Are you kidding me! Let all of these other bored bloggers get their s*#%t done early, you do what you have to do and take care of your sick boy, that is what matters. This coming from a preggers chick, with twins no less, who has shared but 5 or 6 posts on the matter and I don't feel a bit guilty about it. Forget al the bump dates, nursery decor, and maternity photoshoots, I'm busy working and growing two babies, all that will come in it's time and I'm not going to let other bloggers make me feel like I'm behind or something. Hang in there, everything will be fine :)

  4. At least you know it's not all roses and sunshine here! I walked around the house yesterday with a trash bag just picking up all the dirty kleenexes and then pretty much called the house clean (even though it's a disaster!).

  5. You are not alone! I haven't done much of anything for the holiday. I am still buying for THANKSGIVING! Much less Christmas. Lol

  6. I'm REALLY bothered that we have totally forgotten about Thanksgiving. It's a very special holiday to our family. I kid you not, I've seen Christmas trees up on NOVEMBER 1ST. I have never seen that before. Between all of this and then all the stores/malls opening ON Thanksgiving, I am worried that Thanksgiving won't even matter ten years from now. It makes me really sad. I'm sorry things are crazy around your house and I hope the little man feels better. I have bought ONE Christmas gift and our tree will ALWAYS go up the day after Thanksgiving.

  7. I saw someone who posted about five trees and I was seriously almost grossed out. Of course said trees will be "revealed" (barf) in a future post so if they're tabletop trees, fine, but five full on trees is insane. Awesome for people who have their shopping done. I pat myself on the back for having a few ideas and like, three gifts purchased. I refuse to decorate pre-Thanksgiving even though we'll be out of town and I won't even allow Christmas music to happen yet. I feel like blogland has become this thing of being first so you can show that you didn't copy and you're oh-so-original (not you, Chelsea. "You" in general :)) And it is totally just a slice of their life. No one shows the mess of the closet where their regular decor is stored so their Santa collection can take space on the shelves. I'll make sure to post about that for ya!

  8. Since my voice is already in your head, I won't say anything....but you know what I'm saying, my sweet precious girl!!!

  9. Don't even worry!!! I have not done one of those things, either! What even happened to Thanksgiving?? And I thought people did their Christmas shopping on Black Friday, what happened to that?? You just relax and take care of that precious boy!

  10. Well, you hit the nail with the hammer on this post. I was just telling my husband last night that my facebook and blog feed was taken over by Christmas decor. I'm sure some people have a really good reason to get theirs done early but I'm thinking the majority are just overachievers. My four year old asked me why we hadn't decorated last night after seeing that our neighbors had lights up. Thanks neighbor, make a working mommy feel like crap. Remember, social media shows one side to every ones life, the great side. I hope your week gets better.

  11. a-freaking-men. Can I copy this post!? if I get one tree up this year it will be a christmas miracle!!! In fact, with that one, we are thinking of putting it in a room where i can close the doors on too so my boys wont get it and destroy it! I mean I totally am going to try to decorate soon and I hope to make the house cute, whip up some bread and cookies {eventually}, BUT if all of this gets done its cause my husband has ALL of next week off of work and will take a few days off here in a few weeks...NOT cause I am mom of the year and all of the posts this year have made me just feel like a total flop and way behind the decorating game!! I told my husband last night about all of the folks with pristine houses and all decorated and I justified them being on their game by saying telling myself and him that "they are bigger bloggers and probably have sponsored posts coming up and are getting paid to write about their holiday decor so they have to do it early." HA! Maybe next year that will be me, right!?!?! ;) Love your honesty and this post and we are right there with ya!!! xoxoxo

  12. Other than Christmas cards, I haven't done anything Christmas related! We have Thanksgiving for a reason, and a pretty important one at that!! We are definitely in the majority, not the "let's put up xmas now" people! I agree that it's ALL over IG right now, but I sometimes wonder who they are doing it for! Don't stress!!!

  13. You are not alone! My entire Christmas preparation year to date consists of occasionally browsing shutterfly for cards (but not actually choosing) and asking a friend if I can borrow a cocktail dress for my hubby's Squadron Christmas party. Since he might not actually be back in time, buying one seems like a terrible idea. Enjoy your fall and Thanksgiving and know that a lot of people are right there with you!
